I was just reading about 'Opiates' in Wikipedia and it says that the normal lethal dose of Morphine is 120-250mgs. How can that be, I've taken 120 mgs of Morphine and I'm sure some people here have taken a lot more than me? Or is that for a non-opiate tolerant person? Also it says that Heroin just a rapid-acting form of Morphine. Are these statements true for the most part?
Just curious. I'm sure people will have different answers.
I like to browse around Wiki everyday and try and learn something new everyday. Sometimes i read up on things that are of interest to me, such as oppies and sometimes i read up on things that don't interest me as much or not at all, that way i become knowledgeable in various things.
God I'm a nerd.

i haven't read the article in question but usually they gauge those type of things in terms of LD 50 the dose at which 50% of the population will croak. I think its us folks with the high tolerances that are the other 50%.
Also, I take every thing I read on Wiki with a grain of salt.

both statements are right, 120-250mg to an opiate niave person can be lethal.....also heroin is a form of morphine, diacytelmorphine.....it reaches the brain faster than morphine.....Im sure theres a more technical definition, but Im no professor......peace

its fun changing wikis, and saying that someone just got assasinated or something../...or at least I think its fun...for a day some people may think the President of Lithuania is dead.,.

I am reading on Bioavailablilty now. I didn't totally understand what it was but now i do. I kinda new what it meant but I'm glad i read up on it because it makes sense now.
Ok gettin' tired. Tomorrow I'm gonna read up on some other opiate stuff. I've always loved reading up on this kinda stuff, anything about drugs and medicine, the body. I actually wanted to go into Medical school many many years ago before i fell madly in love with opiates but i just never went that route. My mom always tells me i have the brain for it. Sometimes she'll call me and say something like "Ok Doctor, what is this medication" or "Ok Doctor, i have a problem with my foot, what could be wrong"? LOL. She tells me my brain was meant for great things. But, she's my mom, she has to say things like that lol.
Gonna go watch my netflix movies, i got that movie "The Number 23" with Jim Carrey... should be interesting.
Have a wonderful night and have wonderful opiate dreams.

well its like Oxycontin
I would be taking 5 80s at once and be fine with a pleasant nod
I gave my dads friend a 40 and he almost died and ended up in the hospital for an OD
Thank my lucky stars he didnt rat me out
Its just for people who have never done opiates and all of sudden take bunch
course its gonna kill em
Same thing happened to me. I *think* my first OC was just a 20 and I passed out and my ex at the time couldnt wake me up, almost called the ambulance but I came to just in time.
I was opiate naieve at the time as well.
So thats another example.

also a lot has to do with the individuals body chemistry. I know folks on here who say that when they first started, 20mgs of oxy woud get them blasted, but i was never on oxys only hydrocodone, and then took 2 abg 10's and got a very light buzz of off them.
some ppl here love k-pins as well, i remember taking 9 mg's the first day i got them, and then it finally hit me with some semblence of relaxation.
A lot has to do with how well in shape the body in question is also, if your muscle mass is high, and your an athlete, chances are that most drugs will hit you lighter than with a normal individual and will also be excreted much faster.
And for the seasoned opie-users, your tolerance is built up over the years, so the same reason that your body needs mor medication to feel the pain killing effects. in turn, your body also needs more medication to get to a lethal dose. Because tolerance is commonly reffered to as the amount of drug you need to get to have a desireable effect, most ppl dont relize tolerance also builds to the negative effects, such as respiratory depression, constipation, somnolesence, etc....

Ya I guess so! Those poor Lithuanians log on and find out their beloved leader is dead. Then they found out its not true. Talk about playing with heart strings.

They might be talking about injected morphine.
Morphine's oral bio-availabilty is really poor. Something like 30% if i'm not mistaken.
Also every single person reacts differently to any given dose, the numbers they give here is just a mean estimate.

Actually I think that wikipedea is one of the most reliable sources of information available on the net, on almost any subject you could imagine.
That said - nothing beats the first -hand experience, ofcourse.

I've gotta agree with you - Wikipedia has never let me down, and I can smell bullshit at a hundred paces. So far I haven't yet smelt any around the wiki, although I appreciate that the potential for it is high.

Well it is changed to absurd things all the time, but it's usually changed back quickly. And its often so absurd that if you know anything about the subject you'll never believe it. However, I have seen some faulty information, along the lines of urban legend or apocryphal stories, but only on small articles of a paragraph or two, never in the longer ones, which I assume more people edit and correct sooner.

I presume that 120 - 125mg figure is for MO/Sulphate or hydrocholride taken IV'd as opposed to oraly.
Yes - 120 - 125mg Morphine Sulphate IV'd in a non-opiate tolerent patient would almost certainly lead to cardic arreast.
The most I have every taken IV in one go is 60mg - pushed undiluted (I'm talking about sulphate, not hydrochloride), and that was as a tolerent user. I'm sure there are folk around who could tolerate a lot more, but that was enough for me - had me sitting down for the next 30 min - plenty plenty enough that was. Even that amount for a non-tolerent user I think would be cutting it very fine, if not downright dangerous.

G-Dess: I am sure someone wil have already posted this but here it goes. the figure cited is the LD50, as someone DID say, it applies to 50% of the opiatenavive population in general. It has nothing to do with actual toxicity per se. There are some taking several thousand mgs. a day. Myself, I take 650 mgs. twice a day (although I am working that down in a big way).

On heroin...Heroin is essentially nothing but a morphine delivery system. By adding an acetyl group (heroin is made by adding a Glacial Acetic Acid to morphine and heating in reflux) you enable morphine to cross the BBB (Blood to Brain Barrier, which is the problem substances have with crossing into the CNS-Central Nervous System) 3 times as quikly.
Once you ingest heroin though, it is metabolised back into mprhine post haste (well technically not so, it first briefly metabolises into MAM-6 which is more potent, then into morphine.
On Wiki, it is worthless as a source of information sad to say, save for the references at the bottom, often hyperlinked. Bonafide refs are great. Wiki, until this year, had no editorial oversight at all. this meant noone or nothing checked veracity. Even now, as one said, you can change article's info at will. It might or might not be caught by editorilisation but it will be up there for however long. Be careful with the info found there.

Talking about opiate tolarence .... there are a couple of documented cancer cases in the USA of patients on 30 000mg morphine intravenously - per 24hr period!
Fuuuuuck................!
