Howdy folks...I was wondering, what are the present brand names of OTC opiates in Eastern Europe, Ukraine in particular? I've taken plenty of Neurofen Plus (basically ibuprofin w/ 10mg codeine -- costs under two bucks for a box of 10, not too bad for an emergency cold water extraction when on vacation), but I wondered if there was anything better that didn't require a doctor's script. I'm not planning on bringing any back to the states, I just wanted to know my options if I'm in that kind of mood on my upcoming Ukraine visit.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, the upcoming trip is Ukraine. Last time there (and for that matter in recent trips to Romania, Bulgaria, and Russia) all I could find to aleviate those long days stuck in some grungy out of the way little town for a day waiting for a train was Neurofen Plus (maybe that's not the right name...I remember the first word started with an "N" and the codeine containing version was the "Plus). So...if you know the brand names of opiates (or for that matter...any interesting pharmacy goodies, including stimulants or barbituates) that I can get in Ukrainian pharmacy without a local doctor's script, I'd appreciate the tips. I'll be there for three weeks, I don't need anything that would save an addict from WD's, just something that would provide some distraction on a long train ride or what not. So, other than the N... Plus, yes, my question is what can I get and what are the brand names?

Thanks! I appreciate the help.

hmm, I have only been to Bulgaria, you're American right? A dollar will stretch a long way if you're heading that way. Haven't been in the east much at all so I can't really give u any brand names of Slavic type meds but I'm sure u can get benzos and codeine and DHC possibly temgesic or a form of bupe in small doses, do some googling on name information of meds and pharmacies

Ask for Codical or Codolone.. its 30mg of just codeine and its about 10 Euros (expensive) you can get 1 a day from the pharmacy.

My experience is that just about *every* place has morphine, as it is still most common for hospitals and such...and it is often diverted...and I've found best thing is just to see if u find a friendly pharmacist, particularly one near, or in a hospital. the other thing is that morphine, usually has a similar name in other languages, not some bizarro new-wave drug moniker...mostly just gotta hassle around, say how much pain yer in, sombody'll catch on.

Re: codical/codolone -- when you mean 30mg & 10 euro, is that per box, or just 10 euro for 30 mg, period? If for a box, do you recall how many tablets/capsules may be in a given box? I'm not too worried about costs...well, I mean, I have my limits, but I'm willing to pay extra for expedited services and/or convenience.

As for eastern europe being inexpensive, yeah, that's true and it's a wonderful thing. Especially Ukraine -- it's like Prague in 1993 or so, maybe cheaper. Except for Yalta, of course...plenty of things are more expensive in Yalta than in Manhattan, especially if you're obviously American, UK/UK Commonwealth, or otherwise relatively wealthy western european. But the rest of the country makes up for a wasteful weekend in Yalta :)

Duckfeet -- thanks...in longer trips, like Siberia 3 or so years ago, I had the time to hop around and chat up pharmacies to find interesting items, but for various reasons I doubt I'll have much chat time, thus my hope for some local names...but thanks for reminding me, I'll follow your procedures if need be!

It is 10 Euro for a box of 10 30mg tablets. Its not the greatest but its something. Also tramadol is very very cheap and legal OTC in most parts.

Yeah, I've bought tramadol in several eastern european countries, but the vast majority of it was time-release. Fortunately, tramadol is never a problem as my dad will prescribe it for me whenever I ask (he just can't risk a script for something more serious than schedule IV for a family member, it raises red flags if done more than once or twice in a row or so...so tramadol, soma, and clonezapam are all great quantites in my medicine cabinet). Seems like the codolone you described will be perfect -- no messing with APAP or other secondary painkillers, and I'm on vacation, I can handle paying a little extra :) I'll still see if I can nab some hydrocodone, but I have a feeling that'll be harder. Of course there are always pharmacies that'll give you a large variety of interesting goodies if you give them a bit of monetary incentive, but I'll take what I can get quickly and easily.

You know, I live about 10 minutes from Mexicali, Mexico...and I still haven't been there yet, even though when I lived in San Diego I went to Tijuana about once a month or so. It would be interesting to see if interesting goodies are a little easier to get there, because Mexicali isn't as much a drunken tourist trap as Tijuana. I have a feeling I should go -- I'm probably missing out on a lot of interesting goodies.

Codolone is a good way to go. It does the job and even though its pricey you can get a decent buzz if you take a whole box at once. Also you can go from pharmacy to pharmacy and buy it all day long and get a decent stash. Have fun!
