Is there any chance one of you chem buffs could write a small Organic chemistry for drug addicts article? - dealing with basic organic chemistry - mainly associated with narcotics, etc. I started writing something the other day, but I've had no education on org chem and I'm pulling most of it from a 1316 page book that I downloaded..
I'm sure alot more of us would try to participate, if we could 'kinda-sorta' hold our own... or not sit there reading these threads while googling every other word...
Thanks,
-Syn

I could help out with that. As a chemist, what would be better is if you had something specific you were interested in, rather than a general brush up, you know?
Truthfully, there are alot of things you can do at home, if you are so inclined, and they can work. Conversely, there are alot of things that work very well in theory, but lacking the proper training can lead to disasters..

well, of the molecules of each naroctic that I've looked it - they all are build with functional groups that contain oxygen...so I guess stick to that side of everything... a sticky on the chemistry regarding narcotics, etc. What type of reactions commonly take place when dealing with organic chemistry, using narcotic examples(just to keep our short attention spans), and what these reactions do to the molecules. Maybe how to read some of the molecules with the hexagonal shapes, etc.

ooh i have a a question!
if you theoretically had access to a large quantity of naloxone, could you easily (or even possibly) remove the allyl group and re-methylate it into oxymorphone?

DRS,
Not trying to be rude -- but use the http://forum.opiophile.org/images/gnome/buttons/newthread.gif button and create a separate thread about it...
I took a quick look, and it is out there (http://www.google.com/search?q=naloxone+to+oxymorphone)

OK this is my suggestion : A real down and dirty (quick )
way of cleaning cut and other undisirables out of Heroin.
I think it might help alot of people with abcesses, fryed
viens , etc.:jumping-s

UTFSE.. this isn't the thread for that... google it, or post something yourself :)

i think my question is about organic (C,H 'n' O) chemistry and im pretty sure most of us are drug addicts (not that all those drugs are illegal)
and Oxycontinuous asked for a specific question so i gave him one. if were not supposed to ask these types of questions close the damn forum. am i missing something ??
so why make a new thread when this one is perfectly appropriate.
thanks for the link. tho i could've googled it myself. i figure seeing this forum is 'sposed to be mod'd by actual chemists they'd give me the quick run down on the basics, i dont want a recipe or mega details just something along the lines of "yes it can be done you just need a "blah" to remove the "allyl blah" group then "blah" to add the n-methyl group back on.
but if you dont know or dont wanna spread the word thats cool, just say so. i dont care ill go ask someone else or go to the REAL LIFE library and do some researched with info. thats verified and published.

oh, haha -- I'm not meaning to offend - just saying that you'll get much better results if you create a new thread with this in the title :)
No worries,

Here ya go, if ya got these magical compounds. First example I've seen verified of N-allyl cleavages, one of the Grubb's catalysts, in other words a Ruthenium metal with a carbene system (probably a variation of "Grubb's II"). So since naloxone is an N-allyl variant of oxymorphone then I wouldn't be surprised if this could be done. Probably not with any delta 7,8 opiate antags like nalorphine as it will do a "Ring Opening Metathesis (ROP)"...Please just look the shit up, its out there and with the various above keywords you can find it. Organometallic catalysis isn't exactly the starting point for beginner organic. But read it anyway, the guy won a fucking Nobel prize, met him too, nice guy.
Main point: It is apparently possible, cleave it then formaldehyde/reduction or ethyl chloroformate/reduction and so on. Not methyl iodide though. Formaldehyde/reduction probably would be the best but its all academic since Grubbs II variants are fairly expensive, and although I guess some needle exchanges give out narcan you'd still be hard pressed to ever get enough to make it worth it. Better off making etorphine from codeine. Or maybe not. (Not better off that is, not not possible). It can be done in five steps. Whoever can figure the five steps out wins the opiophile of the day award...imagine the bragging rights!

Not to thread jack or anything of the sorts but are there any easy to understand references to understanding images of a chemical's molecular structure and it's potential components\how they can be changed, etc?

Yep, look up the structure! Kidding, you have to learn all the systematic naming shit that no one uses in real life. Then you have to learn all the archaic shit that most of us do use. Really no other way, can't make chem "easy". That's why it can be pretty hard to explain the shit when you have no idea what the other person knows or doesn't know about synthesis and such.
A good way to learn em and get a visual from the names is just look up random structures and look at the names (the full chemical names) and you'll start to notice certain trends, like alpha-methyl this or nor-that or homo, iso, para, and a whole shitload more of words like that that just tell you where a certain group is.
Example of naming excesses:
Methamphetamine=N-methylphenylisopropylamine=alpha, N-dimethylphenethylamine=1-methyl, N-methyl-2-phenylethylamine and a bunch more and that's just a simple molecule. You just start to get an idea after awhile of looking at structures.

bah sounds like too much hassle and chems that aren't easily available.
damn stupid hopes and dreams always being shattered like so many pharmacy windows.
cheers neways ppl.
